GBSLEP endorses publication of HS2 Hybrid Bill
The publication of the HS2 Phase One Hybrid Bill has been endorsed by the Greater Birmingham & Solihull Local Enterprise Partnership who have urged Government to accelerate the project to ensure the benefits of the scheme are enjoyed earlier.
The Bill being published today is a key milestone for the project, moving it from aspiration to reality.
It is the culmination of four years of work by leading global experts in high speed rail, civil engineering, project management and environmental mitigation, as well as being the result of the largest engagement and consultation programme ever undertaken in Britain for a major project.
Andrew Cleaves, GBSLEP Board Director with responsibility for transport, said:”The publication of the Hybrid Bill today marks an important milestone on the journey to the creation of a high speed rail network that Greater Birmingham will be at the heart of.
“At a time when we can see clear signs that our economic recovery is gaining momentum, it is important that we look to the long term.
“HS2 provides a once in a generation opportunity to produce a step change in the economic future of Greater Birmingham.
“We are already looking ahead to what we can do here in Greater Birmingham to maximise the benefits, for example through our submission to the Local Growth Fund.
“The Government¹s determination to press on with HS2 is to be applauded and we urge them to go even further and to accelerate the project, so that we might begin to enjoy the benefits sooner.”
Note: While the GBSLEP Board is in support of the HS2 project, we acknowledge the differing view of Lichfield District Council.
We will press for appropriate mitigation of any environmental and social impacts, but are committed to ensuring we capture and maximise the economic opportunities and potential of HS2 for the benefit of the whole of our area.
