GBSLEP welcomes BBC Academy announcement
The Greater Birmingham & Solihull Local Enterprise Partnership (GBSLEP) has welcomed today’s announcement by the BBC that it is further strengthening its commitments to Birmingham.
The announcement that the BBC will create 190 jobs in the city as a result of the creation of the national talent centre – the BBC Academy – at the Mailbox follows on from the confirmation in March that digital and innovation activities will be focused on Birmingham.
Alongside the Creative City Partnership, the GBSLEP has been working to promote to the strength of digital and creative industries in the region.
Anita Bhalla, GBSLEP Board Director, said: “The GBSLEP has made no secret of its commitment to working alongside the BBC to strengthen and enhance the BBC’s presence and activity in Birmingham.
“We have been working to present our case to the BBC and show how our creative, digital and cultural industries can benefit the corporation, recognising the mutual benefits of a strong presence in the city.
“The announcement about the BBC Academy is the latest in a series of positive steps that demonstrate the progress that is being made.
“In March, the BBC confirmed the creation of the Digital Innovation Unit in Digbeth alongside the digital arts partnership, The Space.
“And the running of the Corporation’s entry-level training here will mean we will have more than 1,000 BBC staff from all over the country coming to the Mailbox – that’s more than 1,000 potential ambassadors who will be able to see just how vibrant and dynamic our city is.
“We will continue to work with the BBC and, at the same time, continue to encourage the development of these key sectors which have such an important part to play in our economic future.”
