Matthew Rhodes

Director for Stimulating Innovation

Matthew has over 20 years’ experience in the energy sector, and has spent most of the last 15 years building and running a small business in the West Midlands, working extensively on low carbon innovation projects with Solihull and Birmingham City Councils (among many other clients).

An alumnus of Oxford University, where he studied engineering, economics and management, and Cambridge University, where as a postgraduate he studied environmental policy and philosophy, Matthew is a chartered engineer and Fellow of the Institution of Engineering and Technology. He spent the first half of his career working in manufacturing and R&D management internationally for Unilever, and subsequently in management consultancy for PA Consulting Group and Hay Group.

Matthew has worked extensively with universities in the UK, Europe and US on collaborative innovation projects. He is an independent industrial member of the EPSRC College of Peers and regularly sits on UK government and EU funding panels to allocate R&D funding. He’s currently an Honorary Research Fellow in Energy Policy at Exeter University.

Since 2016, he’s chaired Energy Capital, which is the body responsible to the Mayor and Combined Authority in the West Midlands for development and delivery of the regional energy strategy. Energy Capital aims to support clean growth across the region by optimising the £8bn a year spent on energy and energy infrastructure by the citizens and businesses of the region.
