National Skills Show Encourages People To ‘Have a Go’ With Hands On Experiences To Inspire The Next Generation
One of the Midlands’ key business leaders has been trying his hand at a new skill ahead of the UK’s largest skills and careers event. Alan Volkaerts, who is board director for the Greater Birmingham and Solihull Local Enterprise Partnership and also operations director for Jaguar Land Rover’s Solihull plant visited Miss Macaroon in Hockley, Birmingham to try out some bakery skills.
The Skills Show, which is taking place at the NEC in Birmingham from 13 – 15 November and FREE to attend, is open to teachers, parents, children and businesses and will showcase a wide range of vocations across the three days, including offering people the opportunity to try their hand at more than 45 skills with the ‘Have a Go’ experiences. This important win underlines Birmingham’s credentials as a centre of excellence for rail engineering and demonstrates how it is best placed and ready for the arrival and delivery of the HS2 project. August’s JSA claimant figures record continued to fall in GBS LEP areas jobless figures
Unemployment in the GBS LEP area continues to fall with Septembers JSA figures recording the total number of claimants in the GBS LEP area falling to 43,679 claimants in August 2014.
Overall, the UK Figures also show a continued growth in private sector employment – up by almost 800,000 in the last year alone. Compared to 2010 there are now over 2.16 million more people in private sector jobs – showing that the Government’s long-term economic plan to create jobs by backing businesses is working.
Unemployment saw the largest annual fall in 26 years, dropping by 468,000, which brings the unemployment rate to a new 6-year low of 6.2%. The employment rate, at 73%, is also back up to the level seen before the recession with 30.61 million people in work.
The number claiming Jobseeker’s Allowance (JSA) has been falling for the last 22 months – with 423,600 fewer claimants than a year ago – and is now below 1 million for the first time since 2008.
Young people saw the largest annual fall in unemployment since records began in 1984 – falling by 213,000 on the year – and has been dropping for the last year. There are now fewer young people claiming the main unemployment benefit (JSA) than just before the recession – having dropped by 133,200 in the past year and for 33 months in a row.

Andrew Cleaves, board director of GBSLEP responsible for transport, said: “Following the recent announcement from the Government confirming the £8m funding for this important project, we congratulate Carillion Construction on winning this contract, which will improve our region’s transport infrastructure and improve traffic flows.
“This project is vital to improve connectivity across Greater Birmingham and Solihull helping businesses with better transport and distribution channels, and easing congestion for commuters. In line with this, more than £300m in funding has been secured for these projects, including £39m across both the National and Local Pinch Point Programmes, £255m for investment in transport in the £357m Greater Birmingham & Solihull Growth Deal.
“As economic growth for Greater Birmingham & Solihull continues apace, improved transport and communication infrastructure gained from projects like this enable businesses to develop and grow as we move forward following the recession.”
GBSLEP Announces round three of Growing Places Fund
The Greater Birmingham & Solihull Local Enterprise Partnership (GBSLEP) has announced the launch of round three of its Growing Places Fund initiative.
With up to £3m available for this round of the fund, applications are invited from1 September to 17 October 2014. Support is being offered in the form of secured business loans as opposed to the matched funding schemes previously provided under the scheme.
Growing Places has been designed to generate investment in infrastructure projects within the GBSLEP area to boost economic growth and in turn enable new job creation, build new homes and commercial premises. In particular, the fund is intended to provide support to those who have previously been refused financial assistance from banks for the purpose of ‘unlocking’ stalled development schemes.

Positive trend continues as JSA claimant rate in Greater Birmingham decreases faster than the national rate
Following the national trend, figures released by the Office for National Statistics (ONS) confirm continued employment growth in the Greater Birmingham & Solihull LEP region, as the number of people claiming Job Seekers Allowance (JSA) drops to 4.9%.
Maintaining a continuous month on month decrease, the number of claimants has fallen to 45,122 across the GBSLEP Local Authorities at the end of July 2014. Whilst not seasonally adjusted, the latest figures show a significant improvement from the same month last year, with 15,980 less unemployed. Read the full media release here.
GBSLEP Number 1 area for Foreign Direct Investment
Recent figures have revealed that the GBSLEP area is attracting more foreign investment projects than any other UK region, rising by 57% from 49 projects in 2012/13 to 77 projects in 13/14. Read more details here.
Birmingham City Council is set to approve a significantly larger funding package to support the delivery of the City Centre Enterprise Zone.

Greater Birmingham Growth Hub moves closer with 30 organisations pledging support
A host of organisations involved in supporting businesses have pledged their commitment to the creation of the Greater Birmingham Growth Hub by signing a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on June 20th at the GBSLEP AGM.
The Growth Hub will create a world-class business support experience for companies in the GBSLEP.

Secretary of State for Business Innovation and Skills Visits Fazeley Studios & the Custard Factory
The Secretary of State for Business Innovation and Skills was greeted by GBSLEP Board Director and Creative City Partnership’s Chair Anita Bhalla and Custard Factory owner Lucan Gray.

HS2 Jobs and Growth Boost Birmingham
Secretary of State for Transport The Rt Hon Patrick Mcloughlin MP visited Birmingham on July 21st and announced two significant HS2 initiatives – the location of the HS2 Construction HQ at Two Snow Hill and launch of the Birmingham Curzon Regeneration Company.
The HS2 Construction HQ is expected to accommodate 1500 jobs the majority of which are new posts, not transferred from London.
The GBSLEP will be a member of the of the Curzon Street Regeneration company and will be investing £30 Million from the Enterprise Zone Investment Plan to kick start development projects in and around the Station. Click here for more information.
The Government has today (Monday) announced that the Greater Birmingham & Solihull Local Enterprise Partnership is to receive £357.3m from the Local Growth Fund (LGF) to help provide up to 19,000 jobs as part of its Growth Deal.
In total, 34 projects have been approved with £63.4m available for the financial year 2015-16 to get schemes started quickly. Read more
Birmingham shortlisted for HS2 College
Birmingham has been shortlisted for the national High Speed Rail College along with Derby and Manchester.
The private sector-led campaign to bring the college to Birmingham brings together the GBSLEP, training providers and Universities and is also being backed by the Black Country LEP. Read more
A record number of jobs (5,988) have been created by foreign direct investment (FDI) over the past year, according to new figures released today.
Investment by foreign firms generated a record 4,337 new jobs in 2013/14, almost double that of the 2,439 created the previous year. Read more
Ambitious plans to create more than 41,000 jobs in Greater Birmingham have been submitted to Government by the GBSLEP.
The Strategic Economic Plan bid by the LEP outlines a total of 52 projects which it is looking to for support through the Local Growth Fund, a combination of game-changing initiatives and shovel-ready schemes right across the LEP area. Read more
A £15m fund to help developers within the Birmingham City Centre Enterprise Zone to kickstart building projects has now launched.
The Site Development and Access Fund was approved by Birmingham City Council’s Cabinet as part of the Enterprise Zone Investment Plan. The fund will provide a mix of loans and grants to prospective property developers with a focus on sites that will generate business rate growth and employment opportunities. Read more
West Midlands LEPs join forces to create £125m Regional Investment Fund
Six Local Enterprise Partnerships (LEPs) in the West Midlands have agreed to join together to create a major investment fund worth at least £125m, expected to create or safeguard 9,000 jobs and help 400 new businesses to start up.
The Regional Investment Fund will provide a range of programmes to support growing businesses in the Black Country, Coventry & Warwickshire, Greater Birmingham & Solihull, Marches, Stoke-on-Trent & Staffordshire and Worcestershire LEP areas. Read more
GBSLEP Appoints Midlands Arts Centre Chair to its Board
The Greater Birmingham & Solihull Local Enterprise Partnership (GBSLEP) has appointed broadcaster and Chair of the Midlands Arts Centre (MAC) Anita Bhalla to its Board, strengthening its commitment to the creative sector.

Private sector jobs on the increase in Greater Birmingham show new statistics
Figures released by the Office for National Statistics show the number of private sector jobs created in Greater Birmingham has increased for a second successive year.
The figures from the Business Register and Employment Survey are the latest detailed breakdown of employment patterns and provide the benchmark from which the Greater Birmingham & Solihull Local Enterprise Partnership measures its progress. Read more
Plans to extend the Midland Metro and regenerate Centenary Square will take a major step forward if they are approved by the city council’s cabinet on October 21 2013.
This will be the first major infrastructure project brought forward through the Birmingham City Centre Enterprise Zone Investment Plan, supporting growth and investment in the city centre. Read more

Apprenticeship drive launched in Greater Birmingham to tackle youth unemployment
A campaign aimed at raising awareness among employers across Greater Birmingham in taking advantage of more than 2,000 apprenticeship grants available specifically in this area has been launched.
The 100-day campaign by the Greater Birmingham & Solihull Local Enterprise Partnership is seeking to make employers aware of the Apprenticeship Grant for Employers (AGE), available for eligible businesses who take on a young apprentice. Read more

The Department for Business, Innovation and Skills has approved an allocation to create a mezzanine loan fund across the Greater Birmingham & Solihull and the Black Country LEP areas in addition to a national tooling fund through the Regional Growth Fund.
